Home Pregnancy Test Accuracy | Pregnancy Test Accuracy Before Missed Period

 Access Diagnostics Fertility Site

Most home pregnancy test these days have very high accuracy usually quoted at around 98-99% accuracy, if,  and this is the important bit, used according to manufacturers instructions.

What does this actuually mean ?

The quoted accuracy figures refer to clinical trials and the rate of pick up of pregnancy in pregnant womens urine, in which the level of pregnancy hormone in the urine sample is greater than the detection level of the test and where the test is being performed by someone who is familiar with the testing process. Quite often the test is being performed in a lab.

This does not mean that if you use the test it will have a 99% chance of detecting pregnancy every time. If the pregnancy is very early the pregnancy hormone (Hcg) may not be sufficiently high to give a positve result on the pregnancy test that you are using. This can cause confusion as many women are now testing for pregnancy before the missed period when the hcg levels are still very low.

Factors that affect the accuracy of the home pregnancy test:

  • whether the pregnancy test is performed correctly-make sure you read and follow the instructions that the manufacturer has provided. Not all pregnancy tests are the same and user error is common if you are not familiar with that particular brand of pregnancy test.
  • how concentrated is the urine sample-it is always best to do a pregnancy test on the urine that you product first thing in the morning on rising from bed, as this is the most concentrated. Often refeered to by doctors as the ‘1st morning void’
  • What is the sensitivity of the home pregnancy test that you are using ? The lower the mIU detection level of the pregnancy test the more sensitive is the pregnancy test ie a 10mIU pregnancy test will detect pregnancy earlier than a 25mIU pregnancy test. Some brands of pregnancy test do not disclose the detection level of the test-in this case look for a pregnancy test that says very early detection or ultra early detection if you are testing before your missed period, as these should be more sensitive than a standard home pregnancy test.
  • Make sure that you time the pregnancy test and read the result at the correct time-this varies from brand to brand so it is important to read the instructions fully before you start.

If you followed all the instrucions and the result is negative, this does not necessarily mean that you are not pregnant. It may just mean that the pregnancy hormones have not reached a sufficiently high level to give a positive pregnancy test on the particular brand of pregnancy test that you are using. If this is the case and you have not started your period then wait 48 hours (if you can ) and do another pregnancy test on a 1st morning void.

When is ovulation ?

Knowing when ovulation means that you know when your fertile time of the month is. The fertilisation window each month is actually quite small for women. If you are going to conceive, it is within 24 hours after ovulation.

Ovulation usually occurs approximately 14 days before your period is due ie the 2nd stage of the menstrual cycle (the luteal phase) is usually 14 days long. This is fixed for most women although it can vary between 11-16 days for some. The part of the cycle that more often varies is the first half ie the run up to ovulation or the follicular phase.

If your follicular phase is the same each month this makes knowing when ovulation occurs very easy and predictable using a calender. The problem occurs when the folicular phase of your cycle is erratic or unpredictable. Irregularity of the pre-ovulation phase are more common in young women under 25 years & in older women (over 40 years) often being shorter or longer and less predictable.

For some women the follicular phase can be very prolonged for example in polycystic ovarian syndrome or the cycle may be anovulatory (ie ovulation does not occur)

If the cycle is irregular ovulation predictor kits can be helpful if you are trying to conceive.

It’s always a good time to make space in your life, clear your mind of clutter.  I do feel though that at this time of year it is important to let the past year settle and make space for what the next will bring.  Set your intention, make sure it is clear what you want from 2012.  (Listening to Tracy’s Oneness Meditation will help you do this.)  Keeping your mind clear of clutter will enable you to achieve what you want.  Those of you who have had a session with me and /or been on Tracy’s course/s will know how to use tools to keep your mind clear and stay in the present moment.  When those ‘old programs’ come up you know what to do! ;-)  For those of you who wish to conceive, make space for your baby, in your mind and in your life, taking time out to relax will help you do this.

Help for individuals and couples in the High Peak area

Dr Diane Critchlow, a clinical embryologist with twenty five years experience in a large NHS IVF Unit, has set up a specialist diagnostic and consultancy service in primary care.

Based in Glossop, between Manchester and Sheffield, the easily accessible and affordable three part service aims to direct couples or individuals as quickly and easily to the most beneficial further investigations or treatment (NHS or private).

The service works to complement NHS investigations, but offers specialist interpretaion of results at a very early stage, to help couples feel less stressed and more in control of their situation.  Even after a few months of trying, we appreciate that individuals can become desperate to find out why they are not getting pregnant, and anxious about what to do next. If you visit your GP, you may be unsure about why you are having tests and what the results may mean. Or you many consider approaching a large fertility treatment clinic, but are worried about costs and which clinic to choose. Other couples or individuals may be delaying starting a family, or considering storing eggs, but need to assess if their fertilty is declining. This new service aims to answer these questions for you.  With direct access to a consultant clinical embryologist,  you are able to utilise expertise not usually available directly to patients, as you would usually see a gynaecologist.  Female ovarian reserve can be assessed with measurement of blood Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) level and a comprehensive semen analysis will give information about male fertility.

Dr Critchlow has a special interest in male fertility and has extensive knowledge of all current fertilty investigations and treatments. Early testing with a full explanation of results can give couples peace of mind, even if results are low, as they can be advised about the best course of action to conceive naturally or given information about options for further investigations or treatment. Early detection of a male factor problem can be vital if the fertilty of the female partner is declining.  In addition, an optional clinic consultation is offered to discuss results in more detail, and provide couples with individualised written information tailored specifically to their situation. We are able to compare tests, treatment types, success rates and costs at different clinics.

If you reside within one hour travelling distance of Glossop Primary Care Centre, SK13 8AY and would like more information about this new service, please contact Dr Diane Critchlow on 0753 8822083 or email enquiries@fertilityscreening.co.uk. more information can be found at www.fertilityscreening.co.uk

Male Fertility Test | In infertility investigations it is crucial to check male fertility

 Access Diagnostics Fertility Experts

We received a phonecall last week from a woman who had been trying to conceive for several years and had been undergoing infertility investigations which had not revealed a cause for her infertility. She was desperate for help & advice.

When questioned we were surprised to find that her partner had not had his sperm checked, and that she had been advised this was ok because he had fathered a child in a previous relationship over 7 years ago. While this is a good sign it does not mean that his fertility is necessarily ok. Fertility can change and seven years is a long time. Our advice to her was that she should talk to her partner & then with his agreement make an appointment with her GP or gynaecologist and arrange for him to have a sperm count done. She seemed to think that they were very unlikely to do this for him as she had asked before and been turned down.

Male fertility is a tricky issue for some men and often there is reluctance on the part of the man to be tested or to come forward for investigations. Particularly when they have already fathered a child in a previous relationship they may feel that the problem must be with the woman.

We regularly receive phonecalls from desperate women whose male partner has refused to be tested by the GP or hospital, and the woman wants to  purchase a home male fertility test kit. Sometimes her partner will agree to doing a male fertility fertility test in the privacy of their own home. Our advice in this situation is to do the home male fertility test. If the fertility test shows a low reading then there is a good chance that the partner will consent to further investigations with the GP or hospital. It may also help to speed up referral if the reading is low. If the reading on the home sperm test is normal then the man may still consent to having a further semen test with the GP ‘just to confirm it’
